THE HITCHING POST MANTEL:
Before there were endless striped asphalt parking lots and multi-story parking garages, commuters hitched their ride to a simple post or rail when they came into town. Homes and businesses across Kentucky had either a hitching post or a hitching rail to tie off your horse to keep it from wandering. Our Hitching Rail mantel pays homage to a simpler time when horse power came with a saddle.
Hitching posts gained popularity in the early 1800s and remained a roadside feature into the early 1900s. At the height of their popularity, they were made in all shapes and sizes and became a decorative status symbol for the elites. Made from stone, iron, wood or steel, the basic need was to have a rail or ring to tie a simple clove-hitch or rolling-hitch knot to keep your horse in place. In Kentucky a lot of communities have horse-themed cast iron posts or simple stone obelisks with a cast iron ring. Youll still find them in use on Kentucky farms, but unfortunately many were lost to the metal drives during WWI and WWII. Our Hitching Post mantel reminded us of the clean lines of the post and rail style hitching post which is how it got its name in our Bluegrass Collection.
DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS:
Horses and Kentucky have a long history together, and before there were automobiles for commuting, homes, and businesses across Kentucky had a hitching post to keep your horse from wandering. Our Hitching Rail Fireplace Mantel Surround pays homage to a simpler time when horsepower came with a saddle. Character details include deeply weathered woodgrain, tool marks, insect damage, nail holes, saw marks, checks & splits, and character knots.
FAUX WOOD:
Although our fireplace mantel shelves appear to be antique wood timbers and beams, they are actually made using our patented casting formulation. Every concrete mantel shelf is hand-cast, and hand-painted by incredible coloring artists to reproduce the natural patina and color nuances acquired with exposure to the elements over time. With every Lexington Hearth Mantel Shelf, you get the beauty of antique timbers, without the splinters. We call that NATURERe-created!
COLOR:
Mantel shelves are hand-painted and will have minor variances in color and highlights.
DIMENSIONS/WEIGHT:
The top rail has a cross-section of 5.5″ x 5.5″ and is 78.5″ long, weighing in at 80 lbs. The rail rests on two posts that each measure 5.25″ deep x 5.5″ wide and 56″ tall, with each post weighing 54 lbs. The posts can be adjusted for lower openings by trimming them with a diamond-bladed saw. (Fireplace Surround posts and top rail are individually hand cast and will have minor variances in weight and final dimensions)
NON-COMBUSTIBLE CASTING MEDIA:
Our high-definition casting formulation is noncombustible and authentically replicates the rich wood grain & character details of antique timbers. Meets or exceeds ASTM E136 laboratory test standards for non-combustibility.
CENTER AIR-GAP CONSTRUCTION:
Reduces weight and minimizes heat transfer to the top of the mantel shelf.

About The Manufacturer:
The scents of bourbon, oak, and vanilla greet you when you walk into a Rickhouse. These massive aging warehouses can store up to 20,000 barrels, containing about 1 million gallons of bourbon. Workers use a hand-operated ricker elevator to transfer the barrels onto storage racks called ricks, the namesake of a Rickhouse.
